Lesson Learned

I will never forget how a simple lesson changed my life; how a best friend suddenly became my hero. Or how curiosity not just killed a cat but also almost killed me.
It all started in the beginning of summer vacation here in Japaina (located to the northeast of Antarctica). My father convinced me to go on a trip to the wood for camping, just to spend some time with nature. To get away from all of that pollution and learn new biology facts that will soon help me in life for I’m studying to be a biologist. I’m barely fourteen years old.
I just knew that I was going to get so darn bored out there in the woods that I had no choice but to invite my best friend Joel to come with us. My mother was very worried, she loves me, she though I was going to hurt myself in some way. Since I was a kid I’ve always been so energetic. I climbed a tree once just to see if it’s true that my father had a bold spot on his head. My whole life had been based on finding out things by myself.
Well, those things that are possible for me to find by myself. It just called my attention. “Mario, let’s go, we are leaving!!!” my father screamed. I had just finished packing my things. It wasn’t going to be a lot, we were just going to be gone for three day; today tomorrow and the day after tomorrow we come back home.
Joel was here already so I just grabbed a granola bar and headed to the car. It was six in the morning, which meant we were going to get to the woods approximately by nine thirty and find a good spot to stay over the night by one. After we get a good spot we had to set up the tents and get ready to eat. It was night already. We could hear many noises. Such as insects, owls and other things.
We made a fire which was easy for my dad to do because when he was very young he was in a boys scout’s team. He learned how to do many things he does today. That night everything was so calm. I slept like a baby. The next day we went to a near by river. The water was freezing. I didn’t expect the water would be this way for the fact that it was summer and the weather was hot.
We actually had fun there! That night Joel and me ate canned fruit, while my dad ate a fish he caught in the river. He knows I’m allergic to fish. That night I couldn’t sleep well; I was having nightmares. Aside from the other animals, there was a strange noise coming from outside my tent.
My dad and Joel were sleeping but I just wanted to sneak out for a couple of minutes. I needed to find out what that noise was. I felt as if it was hunting me. As I started getting closer and closer the noise kept on going further and further. I started running.
All of a sudden, something grabs my foot. It felt as like something with huge teeth bit my foot. There was blood everywhere. I was screaming, and crying. I just couldn’t stand it.
I saw some people coming closer and I felt relief. They were speaking some strange language. I think it was Arabic; I studied it when I was younger. But the most horrifying thing was when they shot me in the leg just because I was moving a little too much. What do you expect from me!!! I was in pain!!!
The next thing I know I’m in a wooden cabin. I sure understood a couple of words they said and it sounded like they were going to shop me off and use my flesh to attract bears to sell their skin. But it looked like they were going to wait for the morning to do this. These people could care less about me. For a couple of hours I felt as if I was dead, but everything was hurting.
One miracle occurred; I knew now that God was looking out for me when my best buddy Joel appeared. He snuck by the window and untied my arms even though it was kind of hard. Everyone was sleeping, but my leg was out so I couldn’t walk. We tried to get out by the door but there was a bell on the door and the minor sound would wake the hunters up.
We tried to go by the window, the same way Joel came in by. It was hard to pass by with a shot leg without making a simple noise. We were lost. Joel said that he had found me because he guessed that I might have been in the cabin. It was easy for him to see the cabin from the point of the mountain our tents were on.
He tried carrying me on his back for he was strong. I would have done the same for him of course. As the morning approached, the hunters had woken up and we knew that for the fact that a shot gun was heard as if it was shot to the sky. It seemed they were mad I was gone! We were almost there, where my father tent was located. I knew that as soon as my father sees the conditions I was in he would have had pity on me and take me to the hospital. It seemed my father wasn’t awake yet!
I got scared because we had hunters following my traces of blood. But as soon we got to the tent we woke up my father. I told him about the hunters but not the whole story so we just grabbed our things, got in the car as soon as possible, and then went straight to the hospital. The doctor said that my leg got infected, and this wouldn't have happened if I would have come as soon as I got it. They had to cut my leg off.
There were many positive things about these occurrences even if you don't notice it. Because I've learned very important lessons in life. For example, a good friend wouldn't just leave you there crying he would help you no matter what and he would always be there for you. Another lesson I've learned is that "curiosity killed the cat." Even though I never had the chance to figure out what the strange noise was, it was the thing that lead me into all the trouble.
The cause of loosing my leg was nothing. It would have been worse if I would have lost my life. Many people don't even care how anybody feels, they just care about money and this is just like those hunters but it's O.K. with me. Not everything in life is perfect.
